All 7th grade students interested in exploring outdoors activities will use practical hands-on experiences to explore, analyze, and interpret the world we live in. Adventure Education course uses 7th grade standards in an experiential education format that include; physical education, language arts, science, and math standards in a new perspective. Students enrolled in the class will meet five days a week for 50 minutes per day utilizing in-class discussion, integration of technology, education on back-country nutrition, and non-traditional movement opportunities all on a rotating schedule.
Students will begin their Adventure Education journey by implementing previously gained knowledge from all of their 6th Grade classes and applying it to outdoor travel and minimizing environmental impact to desert landscape. Lessons students will be engaged in emphasize experiential education: Minimizing environmental impact when traveling, map reading, geocache, identifying flora, fauna, and discovering outdoor activities across the country. They will learn concepts such as; “pack it in and pack it out”, “Leave no Trace” when preparing for back-country travel.
Students will understand what types of outdoor activities are available in their local area and get involved in an established outdoor community. Some lessons students will be engaged in are: Local geography, history of the native Coachella Valley people, The National Monument (Mount San Jacinto), and programs offered through The Coachella Valley Preserves.
Finally students will plan and create the best camping experience ever. Some lessons students will be engaged are: outdoor preparation; wilderness first aid, nutrition in the back-country, back-country travel, and camp preparation and set-up.
